STAMFORD, Conn., July 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- There is no substitute for experience – especially when the experience is about current business issues and challenges. A team of undergraduate and graduate accounting students from Louisiana State University took advantage of this very type of opportunity to capture first place in the Deloitte Foundation's 21st annual National Student Case Study Seminar.

Competing against teams from five other national finalist schools, the LSU team applied its burgeoning skills to solve and present a real-world business case study in accounting and auditing. The Deloitte Foundation awarded each of the five members of the winning team a $2,000 scholarship and recognized the school with a $10,000 award in support of its accounting program.

The team from Brigham Young University placed second, earning its members a $1,000 scholarship, and the school's accounting department received a $5,000 award. Students from the following schools also competed: Florida A&M University, Miami University of Ohio, University of Missouri, and the University of Notre Dame. All student team members received a $500 scholarship, and their respective schools each received $2,500.

The National Student Case Study Seminar is an educational event sponsored by the Deloitte Foundation through contributions from retired partners, principals and directors of Deloitte LLP and its subsidiaries. During the competition, a dedicated faculty advisor and a Deloitte manager worked with each student team to identify, define and solve the complex challenges of real-world accounting case studies. Each group presented recommendations to a panel of active and retired Deloitte partners, who assumed the roles of a client company's senior management or audit committee members. The seminar concluded with the panel selecting the team that best outlined relevant issues and presented its case most effectively.

"The National Student Case Study Seminar is among the many programs our foundation supports to help develop the accounting profession's future talent and help align audit education more closely with real-world challenges," said Tonie Leatherberry, president of the Deloitte Foundation. "On behalf of the foundation, congratulations to all the teams and especially the winners, whose work demonstrates the power of critical thinking and the complement of technical knowledge and soft skills today's audit professionals will need to help them succeed."
